The 9. SEC Technology Tour went to Ortenau on 7 Sep 2018. The programme included the August Koehler SE paper mill and the Börsig winery.
Due to good personal contacts, the seniors were able to visit the Koehler paper mill. Even if you've never heard of Koehler before, you've probably already held the company's products in your hands, for example in the form of playing cards, beer mats, thermal paper (receipts) or carbonless paper. The range of speciality products from Koehler is impressive.
The Koehler Group can look back on over 210 years of company history. Today, with a turnover of over €800 million, it is one of the few independent German family businesses in the paper industry. At its headquarters in Oberkirch and its plants in Kehl, Greiz and Weisenbach, around 1,800 employees produce over 500,000 tonnes of speciality paper and cardboard for the global market every year.
The Börsig family cultivates approx. 5 hectares of vineyards with a focus on red wines from Pinot Noir and Cabernet, but also Riesling, which has an interesting breed due to the granite-containing soil in the Ortenau region.
The senior citizens met in the Straußwirtschaft von Börsig, a lovingly converted large barn, and were able to round off the eventful afternoon in the modern Koehler paper factory with a glass of good wine from the Ortenau region.
